A world made by hand5/23/2023 ![]() ![]() This scenario, after the end of the machine age, obviously echoes many of the topics discussed in The Knowledge. Small surviving communities have regressed to simpler means, living off locally-grown food and relearning skills of self-sufficiency and home production – the central character was once a business executive but now plies his trade as a carpenter. The majority of humanity has succumbed to a combo-whammy of terrorist nuclear bombs devastating major US cities, global pandemics, resource wars and climate change. ‘World Made by Hand’ is the first book in a series of novels set in a post-apocalyptic world, beginning an unspecified number of decades after collapse. Kunstler wrote The Long Emergency: Surviving the Converging Catastrophes of the 21st Century, an analysis of the likely societal effects as we reach depletion of fossil fuels, and has been thinking long and hard about the challenges of a post-oil future. Although it’s been out for a little whi le now, I’ve only just stumbled across and read James Howard Kunstler’s novel World Made by Hand, after it was recommended by a visitor to this website. ![]()

Los Borgia by Alejandro Jodorowsky5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I’ve never read anything about the Borgias prior to this graphic novel, but I had the same basic knowledge about them that I’m sure many of you do: they were a strong family in a time of powerful dynasties, and the fact that we remember their name is testament to that. ![]() Okay, warning out of the way, let’s get down to brass tacks. Basically I’m just saying you might want to reconsider reading this one on the subway or anywhere easily offended people or non-parented small children might be tempted to read over your shoulder (learned that lesson the hard way when a kid started reading Saga over my shoulder on the F train, and I am passing that pro tip onto you, our beloved readers). Dark Horse categorizes this as a book for adult audiences and with good reason. But for people with no frame of reference for this family (I can only assume you’ve been living under a rock), you’re going to want to watch who you read this around. I mean, it’s the Borgias, for FSM’s sake, and if you know anything about that family, have seen any movies or TV shows about them, you would know this. I have to preface my review about this graphic novel with a warning: it is not for those easily offended. ![]()

Mismatch kat holmes5/22/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() It can be a catalyst for creativity and a boost for the bottom line as a customer base expands. ![]() Holmes shows how inclusion can be a source of innovation and growth, especially for digital technologies. A gamer and designer who depends on voice recognition shows Holmes his “Wall of Exclusion,” which displays dozens of game controllers that require two hands to operate an architect shares her firsthand knowledge of how design can fail communities, gleaned from growing up in Detroit's housing projects an astronomer who began to lose her eyesight adapts a technique called “sonification” so she can “listen” to the stars.ĭesigning for inclusion is not a feel-good sideline. Holmes tells stories of pioneers of inclusive design, many of whom were drawn to work on inclusion because of their own experiences of exclusion. Inclusive design methods-designing objects with rather than for excluded users-can create elegant solutions that work well and benefit all. In Mismatch, Kat Holmes describes how design can lead to exclusion, and how design can also remedy exclusion. These mismatches are the building blocks of exclusion. Something as simple as color choices can render a product unusable for millions. Sometimes designed objects reject their users: a computer mouse that doesn't work for left-handed people, for example, or a touchscreen payment system that only works for people who read English phrases, have 20/20 vision, and use a credit card. ![]()
